Tough Question from Via

On page 89 in the fourth paragraph in Wonder, Via asks some tough questions. She says, "Does August see how other people see him, or has he gotten so good at pretending not to see that it doesn't bother him? Or does it bother him? When he looks in the mirror, does he see the Auggie Mom and Dad see, or does he see the Auggie everyone else sees? Or is there another August he sees, someone in his dreams behind the misshapen head and face?...Does August see himself as he might have looked without that single gene that caused the catastrophe of his face?"

What does this question make you think about? Answer Via's question and explain why you think what you think in GREAT detail by using the “five why’s” strategy. Answer the questions with the word “because” and keep asking yourself the question “Why?” until you can’t answer it anymore. Use at least one quote from another part of the book Wonder to support your answer.

  1. Auggie see's himself like everyone else. He pretends that others can't see him. That's why he grew long hair so he could not see people seeing him. He does this because he is hypersensitive to others looking at him in
    "'Julian'
    'And he wasn't nice?'
    'No, not nice'
    'Oh.'"
    He thinks Julian is mean.

  2. I think that auggie has learned to just ignore that everyone else and what people say about him and his appearance. He might look into the mirror and see him and that he is "different" from everyone else. blind people dream only hearing noise. So then people who can't hear only see in there dreams. So I would think that auggie would see him self because I think he can not make another version of himself because he has only see him self in the way he's in now.

  3. Because Auggie's mom asked if the kids were nice he said not Julian because he said whats wrong with your face so some people see it nice or ugly.

  4. Auggie knows that he isn't normal, and he wants to act like a ordinary person. "I know I'm not a normal kid," was my prove. He knows he looks ugly, and hideous, but he doesn't want to be seen that way. August just wants to fit in. He wants to be a regular kid, that doesn't want to be left out.

  5. I think he sees himself in the mirror how other people see him because he thinks he looks totaly diferent from every body else. But just because you look different dosnt mean your not human. Your butifull in your own way.

  6. August sees what other people sees. He is always aware of it. August does think he is normal though. In the beginning of the book, August says he is a normal kid and he does normal things. Other people see August differently and now August realizes that.

  7. Well Auggie sees what other people see but he feels different about it.Auggie knows he is different but he does not really care
He knows that inside he is a different person too. Cause you cannot judge a book by its cover

  8. I think that August knows that he doesn't look normal but he try's his absolute hardest to look normal and act the same way.And Via and his mom and dad supports him their best. Some evidence from the book is when Via yells at children and even grownups and August thinks he isn't normal but he wants to be normal.

  9. I think it does bother Auggie when people stare at him because he just pretends not to react so it seems like it doesn't bother him.

I think he sees himself as most people see him when he looks in the mirror because he sees how other people react to when they see him and he knows that he looks different and so he is able to see himself like he is to most people.

"Whats the deal with your face? I mean were you in a fire or something?"

  10. The way people look at August bothers him. He knows people look at him becouse they all give him a stare and then look away as if nothing happened. August thinks that is really annoying. August sees his face the same way his parents do and via does. They see It as deformed for ace but they are used to it so the deformed faceis like a normal face to them. One quote in wonder is the Galaxy is changing. Planets are falling out of alignment. That means that now August is going to middle school so every thing is changing.

  11. I think that agust see himself as how via sees him because...
1.why. I think this because he always tries to hide his face with his bangs as others look away.
2.why. he hides his face because he doesn't want people to be rude to him or make fun of him because august is always going to look at himself this way.
3.why. He sees himself the way other people see him because he doesn't act any different then them but he still looks different so thats how he sees himself
4.why. because he knows he has a deformed face

  12. I think Augest see him the way no other people see him becouse if some people stare and Via hates it Via is like saying to people that are starring at him "HEA" Via says like telling people not to starre becouse its rude, mean, not normle and Via knows that auggies face is not normle and Via is telling people stop stareing.

  15. August doesn't think he's normal because he said to his mom "why am I so ugly?" But he doesn't see himself like every one else does because he said "people stare at my face so much I've gotten used to it"

  16. I think August sees himself as the August that his mom and dad see him because when he looks in the mirror he understands what everyone else sees. But he also knows that in the inside he's just the same as everyone else. He knows that him mom and dad sees him in a different way and he agrees that people can be rude when they stare and call him mean names. He knows that because he can see that people can be rude and he knows that deep down inside he's just the same as everyone else. "I thought I was used to their stares but I'm not..."

  17. yes it does bother him I now this because on page 77 it says " I do not know what jack answered because I walked out of the classroom without anyone knowing I was there. My face felt like it was on fire I started sweating under my costume and cried" That is why I know people bother him.

I think Agaust sees himself as ordinary Because on page 3 he says "I am not an ordinary ten year old" he thinks that because of his facial deformity.

  18. "Does august see how other people see's him"'? yes, I think Auggie does because, when he was going to his next class their was an eighth grader who bumped in to Auggie while he was going down the stairs and he made a really funny face when he help Auggie up, and Auggie was able to relate to that, why do people relate to other peoples looks? how does Auggie not care about what students or people say about his face?

  19. I think that August sees himself the way other people see him. When August says "I know I am weird looking..."I know that he can see himself the way the other people see him. This is because it seems like he is always aware that people stare at him. He has gotten so used to how he looks to other people that that is how he sees himself. For example, Halloween is his favorite Holiday because no one sees his face and no one knows that is is him.

  20. I think that Auggie does not see himself normal because people at school and other places stare at him. People stare at him because his face does not look normal. His face does not look normal because he has a facial deformation. He has a facial deformation because he was born like that.

"My name is August, by the way. I won't describe how I look like. Whatever you're thinkI get, it's probably worse."

  21. He got used to people staring at him. Why? Because people do it so often. Why? Because he notices them. Why? Because his face looks funny. Why? Because he was born with a deformed face. Why? Because thats how his genes are.

  22. "Does August see how other people see him, or has he gotten so good at pretending not to see that it doesn't bother him?"
August does see himself how other people see him because in the text, he says, "I know I'm not an ordinary ten-year-old kid...But I know ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming away in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don't get stared at wherever they go." August says that he is used to how he looks by now. He knows how to pretend that he doesn't see the faces people make. It doesn't bother him much. It bothered him when all of his friends turned on him. For example he said, "The mummy shrugged. I knew the shrug, of course. I knew the voice. I knew I wanted to run out of the class right then and there. But I stood where I was and listened to Jack Will finish what he was saying."
That means that it DOES bother him. He also went to cry I the bathroom after and declared that he would never go back to school again.

  23. Why doesn't august care what others think? Because August sees himself as a normal person and he does his best to ignore everyone who gives him looks, talks about him, or makes fun of him. It proves my point when he said " I know how to pretend i don't see the faces people make. We've all gotten pretty good at that sort of thing..." Why does Via freak out about August being normal? Because she cares about him. " Mom and Dad would always say im gthe most understanding girl in the world."

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think August has gotten used to his face and seeing it like everyone else, but sometimes he is nervous about people seeing his face. He is probably nervous because he thinks people will judge him or stare at him, "I noticed that some kids were definitely staring at me now.". He's scared that people are judging him because he was born with major facial deformities. People will judge him, because it isn't normal for them to see someone with facial deformities. It isn't normal for them to see people with facial deformities, because most people are born without facial deformities. Most people are born without facial deformities because facial deformities are caused by a single gene that not many people have.

  25. 1. This question makes me think more about Via. What if Via was put in that situation of facial birth defects? How would she respond? I mean, Via cares so much about August and I bet he would do the same for her.

    2. Via's Question:
I don't think August is bothered a little bit by other people, but not a whole lot. But, I can understand if he gets deterred if people are mean to him.
    Why?
That happens because when people stare at him he feels self-conscious, but he has gotten sort of used to it over time. If some one was mean to you, wouldn't you feel bothered? I can prove that because it says, "'Just ditch him,' said Julian… And I started crying."
    Why?
People stare at him because he looks different from them. They feel, "Horrified. Scared."
    Why?
    Different people draw attention.

I think August does see a different "self" in the "mirror" because it is sort of like his imaginary friend. Every child has dreams, that is his. Everyone else sees him as a monster besides his "galaxy".

  27. I think Auggie has figured out that people are going to look at him like that forever and hes gotten used to it. I don't think hes treated like a baby by other people they just treat him more nicely. Hes sees himself as other people do but has figured out to not care as much and try to have fun. In the book he is having fun with Jack Will Even when the older student knocks him over and says "Whoa!" But when he finds out what Jack Will really thinks of him he gets self conscious and gets sad. In conclusion i think Auggie sees himself as other people do.

  28. Yes, August sees himself almost always the way other people see him but he sometimes sees himself the way his parents see him. He wears clothes that cover his face so no one can see him because he knows that he may look a different than other people. Because he looks different, no one wants to touch him, A Quote From The Story " At Beecher Prep, Im the old moldy cheese." Witch is pretty much saying no one wants or likes to touche him because they think he might be contageous.

  29. I think that auggie only sees himself as a normal person when no one reminds him of his disorder. When people look at him secretly or talk about him behind his back he sees himself with his disorder. " I could tell i was being stared at"

  30. I think that Auggie has a face behind his face because everyone has a face behind them, even people who are good-looking. Auggie has a face behind his, but he can't take off his first face to show everyone that he was normal all along. "I get to go around like every other kid with a mask and nobody thinks I look weird." Under that mask is a face, and under that face is a better face.

  31. I think Auggie when he's around other people he sees himself as other people see him. For example here is a quote from the thought wake me up when September ends, " I know I'm weird looking, take a look I don't bite. " And also Auggie in school he thinks of himself as a metaphor in the thought moldy cheese, he thinks that something is going on when people touch him, " I think it's like the cheese touch in diary of a wimpy kid." " The kids in the story were afraid they'ed catch the cooties if they touched the old moldy cheese." " At Beecher Prep I'm the old moldy cheese." I think Auggie acts different around people's actions, like at school people whisper and talk about him, and he knows that he's ugly. But at home everyone kisses and hugged him like he's perfectly normal. So I think Auggie changes his moods and thoughts by people's actions around him.

When his cheecks trembled he was about to cry... theirs a part of me that doesn't want to keep trying:

I think that Auggie didn’t see what other people saw until he heard his friend Jack Will, Talking behind his back with Julian and The mummies. According to the book on page 77, ‘’my face felt like it was on fire while I walked down the stairs”.

Like other people see him of his face since he is different. He wishes he looks different from others because jack will was being nice but then at Halloween he dressed up and jack didn't know that bloody scream was August so he was talking with Henry and someone else and then he went down stairs and cried and then faked to be sick

  43. I believe that Auggie looks at himself like he is a weird looking human being because after all Auggie has gotten used to the way he looks now and he can just tell by the way his family members look and the way other people look that he is just not a person with a normal face although the way he looks in the mirror might look different because after all he's gotten used to his face but deep down he really knows about people looking away and not talking to him; he knows these are all clues of him not looking normal.

Because Auggie wonders why people stop and stare and why it had to be so bad but Auggie understands that he is ugly it's and the way he sees other people he can tell the difference between him and other people who are normal looking and don't have a problem."why do I have to be so ugly mommy"?," i know I am".-Nate
