What's the Big Idea?

In the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio, there are several "big ideas" throughout the story. These big ideas area also called "lessons" or "morals". Every good story, from small moments to short stories to novels have big ideas. We express them in the form of questions, so we can talk about and write about them.

A big idea from Wonder is "What is beauty?"

A big idea is a question that may be answered in many different ways. It is a "big idea question."

As you read your indendent reading book, write at least one big idea question in the comment section below.

Letter for president

Imagine that instead of holding an election to decide who would be the next President of the United States, it was up to you to choose someone for the job. The only problem is you have to convince the person you choose to give up whatever it is he or she is currently doing and be president instead. Not everyone wants to be president. Think of someone you know who would be a good president - maybe one of your parents, or your teacher, or some other person you respect a lot. Then write them a letter convincing them to accept the job of president of the United States.

Gandhi Graphically

I am in the process of actually reading my very frst graphic novel from cover to cover. As a reading teacher, I never was really drawn to graphic novels, because I didn't really consider them "real" books. That was my bias.

Of cours, like a lot of things over the past 25 years, my mind was changed by my wife, Mary Beth, who is a voracious reader. Reading is one of MB's biggest hobbies. She is in three book clubs and reads every night for at least 30-45 minutes. So whern she started reading graphic novels, I noticed.

I have always been fascinated by the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi, but the extent of my understanding of his life is limited to the movie, "Gandhi". When MB brought a grahic novel home from the library called Gandhi: My Life is My Message, I paid attention. When she said, "You really should read this graphic novel," I knew I had to read it. When she said, "I really like graphic novels," I knew they were something I needed to read, too.

Reading is very much a social activity. We take book recommendations from friends. Those books change our lives. Graphic novels are changing mine.

Closure

"They found Mitzi's body about a mile away from the house. It looked like she had been dragged by coyotes"

Closure.

Finally the mystery of the missing family dog was resolved, the 12 pound terrier with a pudgy mid-section and quiet disposition had been discovered. Dead.

This was the conclusion that we all feared. Dragged away from home in the late evening by a hungry predator. I still can't quite believe that there is a pack of coyotes roaming the streets of the Georgetown subdivision in Beverly Hills, Michigan.

"You know it's legal to kill a coyote in Bevrly Hills, but it's illegal to shoot a gun in the city", my brother-in-law remarked.

At least they know, so they won't have to wonder anymore.

Pistons Preseason Paradise

I awoke with a snort, wondering if I was in a dream. The fifty foot-wide megatron screen presided over me like a billboard, bigger than any TV I had ever seen. But it wasn't the mere size of this behemoth that continued to shock me, as I sat in the first row of the upper bowl at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Hey, there's Zack, I thought to myself. And Chris. They were off to the side of the screen, looking up at the entertainer who was was dancing in the aisle next to where they were sitting. They had moved down to the lower bowl and found some choice seats closer to the court. And now they were in the megatron.

This being 2014, I did what any number of people worldwide would do in this case. Yep, you guessed it, I pulled out my cell phone, praying that the moment would not pass me by.
