Wouldn't you know it? The Joberts 6th graders just had a conversation last Thursday about the N word. Who uses it? What does it mean? Why are there different meanings depending on who uses it and the context in which it is used?
What's interesting about this is that when I opened my morning Free Press today, I saw an article by one of my favorite rabble-rousers, Mitch Albom, about, yep, you guessed it, the N word. Apparently the National Football League is debating whether or not to assess a 15-yard penalty to any player who uses the N word in a game. Read the article here.
Albom thinks it's a good idea to have the penalty and get rid of the word. Not everyone agrees. It is certainly an interesting issue that is somewhat complex. I tend to agree with Mitch. Let's get rid of the N word.
