The clock read 3:45am. Nope, not time to get up yet. I've got another 1:15 to sleep, I thought.
The clock read 5:00am. I awoke with a vision in my head I had never seen before. Carlie walking. Not just randomly walking anywhere, but walking aroiund the perimeter of the classroom, briskly, and with purpose. In my dream, she was sitting at her table and then erveryone looked at her, as if she were going to answer a question in front of the whole class. Suddenly, she pushed her chair back from th etable, stood up and quickly walked around the room, almost at a run-walk pace.
Dreams are powerful. I don't pretend to know all the reasons why we dream or what they always mean. I do know this. I finished resading Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper and it changed my life. To borrow a line from my friend Annemarie, I will never look at another person with a physical disability the same again. After reading about Melody in the book, I asked Carlie if she wanted to sit in a regular classroom chair. She said she'd ask her mom.
On Sunday night, I called Mrs. Suris and mentioned Carlie sitting in a regular chair. She said she'd come in and show me how to move Carlie from her wheelchair to a regular chair. Carlie has been sitting in a regular chair this week.
The first time she moved was on Monday afternoon during social studies. When she was seated in her new chair, Jacob P immediately noticed and said, You're in a blue chair...AWESOME!
