They Took Down the Tree

Over 100 years. That's how long the tree stood, guarding the entrance to the house we have called home for ten years, but which has stood in place since 1918.

The tree had some dead branches, and it was concerned a big one would snap and fall, crushing a car or a pedestrian, or a cat or.  Dog that might be unlikely enough to find itself underneath th he massive red maple. At any rate, I made the mistake of calling the city of Royal Oak.

All I wanted was a trim, to have the dead branches removed. What I got instead, though, was the removal of two century-old trees. Instead of just a trim, the city decided to remove the entire tree. Not only that, but another ancient tree, on the other side of our house, was deemed unfit and cut down as well.

The most troubling thing is that the core of the big maple was solid. No rot or disease. It seems as if a trim would have sufficed. Not so with the second tree, as it was hollowed out in the core and could have fallen easily in a brisk wind.

At any rate, we are nearly treeless now, with only 10-15 year-old trees left in front of our house, mere shadows where two giants once stood.

  8. This makes me realize how important this tree was. It was historic and proud as it stood, decaying today. Now only when a tree is cut down I realize how special they are.

  9. This connects with my tree in my front yard. The city cut it down when I was about 7 and it was very very sad. But they planted a new one so it's okay.

  11. Why did they cut down the tree. I reminds me of a battle book last year when they did not want the orange tree to be cut down and they stood up for it.

  13. That reminds me of when my family had two pine trees out in the back yard. They were baby ones, that were about as high as Mr. Joe. (You) We have one right now because one started having dead branches and turned brown and when it was all down we got it removed and it was depressing. But I had never seen a brown pine tree, so that was a memory. But I get how you feel, but we didn't replace it so that was that. But Now I have kind of forgot about it because their is a garden there now and that was a long time ago. But it is a good memory.

  22. That's so sad and all you asked for was too cut down a branch before somebody died. That happened when a huge tree fell on my favorite trampoline. It dented the pipes it was terrible.

  23. This is difference from national forests. In the natural forests they just let them grow. The can grow for longer than 200 years

This is similar to when we had to cut down the willow tree in our backyard because it was too big.
