Eleven by Sandra Cisneros

You are always 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,etc. She Says "I'm 11 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1" "This is when I wish I wasent 11, Because all the years are all inside me" She keeps talking about how she Is Acting 3, 5, 10, etc. "Like that part of me that's three wants to come out of my eyes.

  5. 1. She finally realizes that her birthday is not as fun as she expected and she wants the day to be over. Also she thinks that here birthday was bad today. I think that she just has to look at the bright side of things.

  6. 1. Rachel realizes that being eleven doesn't always go the way you expect it to because she is also 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. It doesn't go normally because she can cry like a 3 year old. Or she could have a tantrum. Or be immature. Or she could also do a lot of other things.
    2. Some of the words she says are 11, 10 ,9. She also says 8 ,7, 6. And she says 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. She also says she wants to be 102 a lot. And she says she wants to be anything but 11.

And at different times of your life you maybe feel like your three when your crying or when you sit in your moms lap because your scared and you feel like your five. Rachel realizes that sometimes you have to take or wear something that is not yours and you don't want to. Like when Rachel has to take that jacket that nobody wants the jacket because it looks like its from 100 years ago and she has to put it on her desk then wear it. And she cried and she felt like she was three in front of every one.

  9. Rachel understands when she turns eleven "you are not just eleven you are ten nine eight seven six five four three two and one". This will help her understand when others do something that is not like there age to do they are just being a different age at the time. example "when her mom cries she tells her you are just being three right now" not to be mean just to say I understand. Anouther example is in the story "nothing could come out of my mouth I thought I was being five". This will help her understand others when they are feeling a different age.


    Somthing that keeps showing up is her saying " I am eleven ten nine eight seven six five four three two one". This keeps showing up because it is her birthday. Also she does actions in the story like crying and she says " I am acting like i am three". Anouther example is her thinking in her head every time she does somthing that she would do at a younger age she woulld say " today is my birthday mamas making me a cake and when dad gets home they are gong to sing happy birthday to me. This is why rachel keeps on saying i am eleven ten nine eight seven six five for three two one.

  10. 1.Something new rachel notices is the fact the shes 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. she figures out that its ok to be three somtimes and cry and be five or say somthing stupid thats ten. i think she notices that she is eleven now but also 10 9 8 7 6 5 3 2 1.

  11. 1. She realizes that she is all the ages when she is crying. She wants to be invisible. She says "You expect to feel 11 but you are 10." She also says "You might need to sit in youre mama's lap because you are 5." She also says " When youre all grownup you might need to cry like youre 3."

    2. She always says that she is 1 to 11. She proves this because she cry's in front of the whole class. "and all of a sudden I'm crying in front of everybody." Also when "are pushing at the back of my eyes." Also when "That's not, I don't, you're not...not mine."

  12. Rachel realized that sometimes, you act like your different ages at different times. For example, she said "I'm eleven and it's my birthday today and I'm crying like I'm three in front of everybody." The information from the text means that she thought she was crying like a three year old. She understands that her teacher may have forgotten something because she thought that the sweater was Rachel's. In the text, she said "of course it's yours." She also said, "I remember you wearing it once."

    This might change things in her life because she might stand up for herself in the future. In the text, Rachel says, "that's not, I don't, you're not...not mine." She didn't say it very clearly because the teacher gave it to her. Rachel also thought, "I finally say in a little voice that was maybe me when I was four." Next time, she might speak up to prevent problems like this from happening.

    What keeps showing up again and again is that she keeps reassuring that everything's going to be OK. For example, when she says,"there's a cake Mama's making for tonight, and when Papa comes home from work we'll eat it." She also says,"there'll be candles and presents and everybody will sing Happy birthday, happy birthday to you, Rachel." She also mentions that if you're eleven, how many years you can be. In the text, it says,"I'm eleven,ten,nine,eight,seven,six,five,four,
    three,two,and one,but I wish I was one hundred and two." She also mentions that she wishes that she's one hundred and two. It says,"today, I wish I was one hundred and two instead of eleven because if I was one hundred and two I'd have known what to say when Mrs. Price put the red sweater I my desk."

  13. 1. Rachel realizes that being eleven isn't what you expect it to be. You still feel ten and she says that you're also 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 years old. "I wish I was anything but 11." It changes things because the she now knows how to act and what to do while she's eleven. It likes you have eleven rings inside of you.

    2. It 11,10.9.8.7.6,5,4,3,2,1 is the language the person is using. "What you don't understand about birthdays is that when you're also 11, you're 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,and1." She also repeats how the red sweater isn't hers. " not mine, not mine, not mine." She also wishes that she was 102 years old instead of 11.

    She figures that the sweater isn't even hers! Its "that stupid Phyllis Lopez who is even dumber..." This might make here not like phyllis and sylvia.

  15. 1. Rachel realizes something new, when her day goes horribly wrong. She realizes that when you a certain age, your still the ages younger. After Sylvia Saldivar accuses her of denying that the sweater is hers, she answers like the 4 year old inside of her. "I finally say in a little voice that was maybe me when I was 4". Then when Mrs. Price doesn't reply, her 3 year old wants to come out of her eyes. "The part of me that's 3 wants to come out of my eyes". These events causes Rachel to realize that when you're 11, there's also a 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 inside of you.

    2. The language that keeps showing up again and again is the, when you're 11, you're also 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1. "I'm 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1". It also symbolizes the actions that you might do at the ages that you passed. "And maybe 1 day when you're all grown up maybe you'll need to cry like you're 3". It is also showing up again and again because the story is about Rachel who has a bad birthday and does actions that 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1 year old would do. "I'm crying like I'm 3".

And when you wake up on your eleventh birthday you expect to feel eleven, but you don't. You open your eyes and everything's just like yesterday, only it's today. And you don't feel eleven at all. You feel like you're still ten. And you are-underneath the year that makes you eleven."

"Still ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, and one." she also realizes that she has to be mature about little things like an ugly sweater. "-- are pushing at the back of my eyes when i put one arm through one sleeve that smells like cottage cheese and then the other arm through the other and stand there with my arms apart like is the sweater hurts me and it does, all itchy and full or germs that aren't mine." This might change things because if she hadn't cried from the embarrassment, then that would show lots of pride and that she is now clearly eleven.

    Rachel finally realizes something new when the story says, "That's when everything I've been holding back since this morning, since when Mrs Price put the sweater on my desk, finally lets go, and all of a sudden I am crying in front of everybody." This proves that she realizes something new because at first she thought that she was going to have a perfect day as a fresh 11 year old, but instead she felt like three-year old. At that part of the story she realizes that no one feels eleven right away. Since she cries in front of everyone she it means that she has been holding back all emotions from all ages - Birthdays are sensitive times. I found out that she can act different ages and its okay. "This is when I wish I wasn't eleven, because all of the years inside of me…"

    This might change the story of her life because she is growing by how you realize that when you are older you get more power within yourself but in different ways. Age doesn't always come in maturity. I can prove this because when she says, "I'm eleven today. I'm 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. But, I wish I was 102." It means that she wants to become wiser. But, she had it in her without even realizing it.

    The language/idea that keeps showing up again and again is when she counts backwards from eleven to one, to show that she is all of those ages inside. I thinks this keeps showing up again and again because the author wants to stress the concept that just because you are older it doesn't mean that you shouldn't let your emotions out. I can prove this because she says, "I am eleven, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two and one," 3 times in the story. It is important because if you 11 then you shouldn't be afraid to be yourself and get grumpy or sad sometimes. When she says, "This is when I wish I wasn't eleven, because all of the years inside of me- ten, nine… and one- are pushing at the back of my eyes." She explains that she has so much emotions that she is holding back. "Not mine, not mine, not, mine," expresses the part of her that is still two.

  21. Rachel realizes something new when Phyllis Lopez says she remembers the red sweater is hers. She figures it was hers. Rachel hated it so much that takes it off right away and gives it to her quickly. She cried to because all her "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5,4 ,3, 2,and 1" year old feelings came to her like how she said "maybe your all grown-up maybe you will need to cry like if your 3". She calms down by saying "I'm eleven today". This will change her life because human-beings have different feelings. This is an a-ha moment.

    Rachel had feelings that she had over and over again. One of them were "because all the years inside of me-ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, and one". It means that she will act how when she was, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, and one year old feelings came to her. Also she repeatedly said "I wish I was 102 years old". She said "not mine not mine not mine".

I take it off right away, and give it to her" She might remember this when she's older and call Sylvia and Phillis stupid a lot.
    2. The words "I'm eleven, and its my birthday today" keep repeating because this bad thing happened on her birthday. Also, she kept repeating "10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2 and 1" because it represents all her years that where inside her. "Some days you may say something stupid, and thats the part of you thats being ten. Or maybe some days you might need to sit on your mama's lap because you are scared, and thats the part of you that's five, and maybe one day, when you're all grown up maybe you will need to cry like you're three, and thats okay.

  26. 1. Something that Rachel repeats is the hurting or pushing back of the 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When Rachel mentions it she says "I'm feeling sick inside, like the part of me that's three wants to come out of my eyes,only I squeeze them shut and bite down on my teeth." Then on the back of the sheet Mrs.Price scolds her and tells her to put the ugly red sweater that smells like cottage cheese. Then it finally lets out, what shes been holding in all morning the 3 year old starts coming out of her eyes. I think Sandra Cisneros writes that part over and over, because sometimes everybody gets embarrassed.

I think she also repeated it again and again because, Rachel said at the beginning of the story that when you turn elven, you also ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, and one. So its got to be really hard hold it all of those years in trying to be mature. 2. Something that Rachel realizes in the story is that its really hard push back. All those years like three, for example. She trying to hold back the tears from the part of her thats still 3. And at some point its okay to let it come out when you can't hold it back any more.

Rachel realizes something new when " but the worst part is right before the bell rings for lunch that stupid Phyllis Lopez who is even dumber than Sylvia Saldivar says she remembers that the red sweater in hers!" Rachel realizes that the ugly red sweater was actually stupid Phyllis Lopez's. Rachel is probably mad and relived at the same time, Mad because she had to wear the sweater and relived because she would not have to wear it for the rest of the day (or throw it over the fence).

    1. One of the A-Ha moments were when Rachel thought, Only today I wish I didn't have only eleven years rattling inside of me. She thought that because she wanted to be 102 instead. Also, another Aha moment was when Rachel was at school and she thought, The teacher is right because she is older and the teacher and I'm wrong because I'm the student and I'm younger. She realized that she would have to wear the sweater for the rest of the class no matter what because that is what her teacher told her to do. If you do not listen to your teacher do what he tells you then you will get in trouble and so will Rachel.

    2. There were lots of times when this author repeated things. One of them was when Rachel was thinking in her head that there were still some parts of her that were 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 , 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 even though she is eleven. One time she thought that was during class when she was thinking, all the feelings from 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 , and 1 were pushing into her eyes (Rachel was about to cry) because she had to put the sweater on. Another repeated part of the book was when the author wrote, sometimes you need to cry like you're three and that's OK. She wrote that when she said Rachel's mom was crying like she was three and when Rachel was in the classroom she cried like she was three. Something else that was repeated was when Rachel thought, Not mine, not mine, not mine. Rachel said Not mine in the classroom when the teacher was giving Rachel "her" sweater.

This experience would change her thoughts on how she thought eleven would be and would react differently.

  36. This is ainsley. For number 1. She realizes something new by listening. When Mrs.Price tells her "of course it's yours" Rachel thinks she's right, even though she's wrong, Rachel learns that adults aren't always right by listening. This also happened when shever said "everyone needs to cry like they're 3.

  39. Quentins comment: 1. Rachel cant believe how badly her day has gone so far on her birthday. Sylvia saldivar told the teacher that the ragidy old red sweater was hers. But its wasnt hers. When the teacher gave it to her and told her to put it on she started to "feel 3". She just could not wait to go home.

    One repeating sentence is, "eleven you're also ten, and nine, and eight, and seven, and six, and five, and four, and three, and two, and one." Also repeated is, "I wish I was one hundred two instead of eleven." The main repeat is when she thinks, "That's not, I don't , you’re not...Not mine." The author repeats that is not hers because it is the main part of the story. Sometimes lots of thing don't go as planned on your birthday just like Rachel's.

Rachel realizes something new when " but the worst part is right before the bell rings for lunch that stupid Phyllis Lopez who is even dumber than Sylvia Saldivar says she remembers that the red sweater in hers!" Rachel realizes that the ugly red sweater was actually stupid Phyllis Lopez's. Rachel is probably mad and relived at the same time, Mad because she had to wear the sweater and relived because she would not have to wear it for the rest of the day (or throw it over the fence).
    2. Rachel's feeling "Eleven, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four and three and two and one" is repeated again and again because each year is still inside of her and when Rachel 'says' "that's when 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 are pushing out the back of my eyes" she means that all the sadness and tears that she had held in for so long she let out and "all of the sudden i'm crying in front of everybody" Rachel also 'says' "today I wish I was 102, if i'd have been 102 then I probably would have known what to say when Mrs. Price put the red sweater on my desk." the author repeats many different times that the ugly red sweater is not Rachel's, she repeats it a lot of times so that you know its not hers and you know how hard Rachel is trying to keep her tears in and to tell Mrs. Price that it is just not hers. When Rachel has to wear the sweater she is so mad and she does not want to be eleven anymore!

  43. 1. How does Rachel realize something new, understand something different or finally figure something out? How might this change things in the story or in her life? This is an a-ha moment.

    Rachel realizes something new when Sylvia Saldivan tells the teacher it is Rachel's sweater. She realizes that Sylvia is stupid when she says " that stupid Sylvia says "I think it belongs to Rachel"." Later on in the story when Phyllis Lopez admits the sweater is hers Rachel also realizes that she is stupid as well. "That stupid Phyllis Lopez, who is even dumber then Sylvia Saldivan, says she remembers the red sweater is hers!" This changes how she thinks about here two friends. She starts to realize that they are not as nice as they seem. When the author writes " maybe because I am skinny, maybe because she doesn't like me......"

    2. Now, what language keeps showing up again and again in Eleven?

    The language that keep showing up again and again in the story is what I will start to call number or age language. This means that she keeps counting backward in numbers from eleven for example the author writes " when your eleven, your also ten, and nine, and eight, and seven, and six, and five, and four, and three, and two, and one." She keeps saying how when your eleven your also all the ages you were before. " all the years inside of me—ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, and one." Again another example of age language. Finally the author also uses age language when she says "Today I wish I was one hundred and two instead of eleven."

Rachel figures something out when Phyllis Lopez says that she realizes that the red sweater that Rachel was forced (by Mrs.Price, after Rachel telling her that it wasn't hers) to put on was hers (there is a reason why Phyllis is mentioned that she is "stupider than stupid Sylvia Saldivar") She tries to take it off quickly (defining the fact that Rachel did not like the sweater and was not comfortable with it on) and hand it back to Phyllis. Before she handed it back to Phyllis, Rachel cried with it on (not counting the fact that Rachel did not like the sweater) because all her "10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1" feelings came out "behind her eyes", also saying that you can cry like that you are 3 even if you are a grown-up. Rachel calms down when she says that today's her birthday and she's turning eleven, and thinks about what might happen when she gets home. This is an a-ha moment because you can tell that everyone has their own feelings, even if you seem to be an emotionless person.

    These are a few things that get repeated over and over in the text.
    1. When she says that "once you are 11, you are also 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2 and 1 all at the same time", which means that once you pass your last age, it's still inside of you.
    2. When Rachel wants to be 102 instead of 11 because of the "incident" (not from the book) that happened that day.
    3. When she repeats that the sweater is not hers and she doesn't want to wear it because...why would you want to wear a sweater that looks ugly and it's not yours?

  45. Rachel is eleven now but doesn't feel different. She is not having a good birthday because she is embarrassed. She feels like she wants to cry like she is three again. She realizes just because you are older from a birthday doesn't make you feel older right away. She knew the sweater wasn't hers and she felt bad that she had to keep it. "11 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1." is said again and again. She feels better when Phyllis said it was hers even though she knew it wasn't hers the whole time.
