  10. I think this will change the story, because Squeaky will see Gretchen and Raymond differently. "And I look over at Gretchen wondering what the P stands for. And I smile. Cause there's no doubt about it. Maybe she'd like to help me coach Raymond; she obviously is serious about running, as any fool can see." In this quote, Squeaky realizes that Gretchen is actually a good runner and that she want's her to help her coach Raymond. "It occurs to me, watching how smoothly he climbs hand over hand and remebering how he looked running with his arms down at his side and the wind pulling his mouth back and his teeth showing and all, it occured to me that Raymond would make a very fine runner." In this part of the story Squeaky finally sees that Raymond would make a good runner. The story shows that Squeaky changed because of the new girl Gretchen, making her realize that Gretchen is a good runner and that Raymond would be a good runner.

And in this race with Gretchen Squeaky relizes all of the opportunities that she has with other things. She wants to help Raymond and be friends with Gretchen, I can prove this because it says, "Maybe she'd like to help me coach Raymond". This might change the story in her ice because she says, "…with a little more study I can beat Cynthia and her phony self at the spelling bee…" And she has the idea of starting piano, too, so she is recognizing the opportunities and taking them, which can change her life.

  32. Squeaky has a few A-Ha moments in this story I found two: and I almost stopped to watch my brother Raymond on his first run. I also found another a-ha moment: and I smile. Cause she's good no sought about it. 34. I think there was an Aha! moment when Squeaky realized and had an Aha moment when she looked on the other side of the fence and saw Raymond with "palms tucked up behind him, running in his very own style," and "he starts climbing up, nice and easy but very fast. And it occurs to me, watching how smoothly he climbs hand over hand and remembering how he looked running with his arms down to his side and with the wind pulling his mouth back and his teeth showing and all, it occurred to me that Raymond would make a very fine runner." Those two moments contributed a lot (I think) to Squeaky's aha moment because she noticed that he can keep up with her "Doesn't he keep up with me on my trots? And surely he knows how to breathe in counts of seven cause he's always doing it at the dinner table, which drives my brother George p the wall." So I conclude that when Raymond was running by the fence she had an aha moment and realized that Raymond would make a fine runner.

  38. At first, Hazel (Squeaky) wants to win, and not let Gretchen win, " So, as far as everyone's concerned, I'm the fastest and that goes for Gretchen too, who has put out the tale that she will win the first place medal. Ridiculous. In the second place, she's got short legs. In the third place, she has freckles. In the first place, no one can beat me and that's all there is to it." Then, after she actually wins the race she discovers that Gretchen isn't as bad as she thought. " And I look over at Gretchen wondering what the P stands for. And I smile. She's good no doubt about it. Maybe she'd like to help me coach Raymond; she obviously is serious about running, as any fool can see. And she nods to congratulate me and then she smiles. And I smile. It's about as real a smile girls can do for each other, considering we don't practice real smiling every day, you know," And she discovers that Raymond is going to be a great runner.

  40. There were a lot of times when Hazel changed. For example, when Mr. Pearson said her name as Squeaky Hazel corrected him and said that her name was Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parker and that is something that she had never done before. Also, at the end, Hazel realizes that maybe Gretchen wasn't so bad after all. She also thought that Raymond was a good runner and that maybe Gretchen could help train him so he can get better at it. Hazel realizes that Raymond was part of the family tradition of very fast runners. I think that if the author, Toni Cade Bambara, were to make another story continuing this, the girls, Gretchen and Hazel, would become good friends.

  41. One of Squeaky's aha moments was at the very end. When Squeaky realizes that she can do multiple things other than running if she tries, and puts her mind to it. At the beginning Squeaky is all about beating Gretchen, and showing her whose boss. At the end Squeaky's heart loosens up a bit and she respects Gretchen, and maybe even wants to become friends with her. I think that the moral of this story is, don't judge people on how they look on the outside but on the inside.
