The Habit for 5th Graders

20 minutes a day. 10 minutes a day. 5 minutes? None?

Do I read? Can I read? I mean really read. The kind of reading where I can't imagine not reading every single day. I'm talking about a habit here. The habit. Like brushing my teeth. Every day.

What is it about me that makes me a reader... or not?

What can I do to improve?

It's no different from any other part of my life. I have to constantly ask myself: how can I get better? Even Paul George and Kobe Bryant, as talented basketball players as they are, ask themselves how they can improve their game.

Of course, this all means that reading has to be something worth doing. That reading is something everyone should know how to do and do well.

I've never met anyone, heard of anyone, or seen anything that says, "reading isn't important - don't do it."

I have met a lot of people who have said, "I don't like reading. Reading is hard. I don't read. I don't take time to read. Reading sucks."

Patricia Polacco has dyslexia and didn't learn to read until she was 14. Then she couldn't stop reading. She is now a professional writer.

I've also met people who have said, "reading that book gave me hope that my life wasn't so bad. Reading that story taught me that I wasn't the only one being treated like a piece of crap. Reading that story made me realize I wanted to help cure cancer or find a way to help people who were homeless. Reading let me travel to places all over the world without having to leave my room.

How do you feel about reading today?

Answer these questions in the comment section below:

1. Describe your daily reading habit. Do you read at least five times a week on your own from a book of your own choosing? Why or why not? Explain.

2. What can you do to improve? Diversify your genre? Find a book or short story that you really, truly like? Stop faking it? Take time from something else you do every day and give it to your reading habit? Explain.

  5. I read everyday before going to bed for about 20 minutes with a book of my choice because I love reading. I like how books pull me in and take me to places I've never been.

I think I can improve by diversifying the genres I read, because I usually read fiction and I would like to try biography. I want to read biography because I want to learn about other people's lives.

    1.)
Ever since recently, I had started a new reading plan. That plan is to read at least 6 days a week 20 minutes a day. So, a habit I have is to read once I get home from school and a few minutes before I get to bed. I choose my own book. I read at least 5 times a week because I like reading and I know that I am learning.

    2.)
I can improve reading with feeling and reading to someone. I need to be able to understand my reading in order to get something out of it - reading with feeling. Reading to someone helps build confidence. I think my genres is really diverse I will read any book that is recommended. I read my own desirable books, I find myself an excellent reader. I never fake read and overall I think I am perfect!

  10. I don't read every single but I do read most of the week.
I sometimes have my parents help my choose with my books because I never know what book is right for me but sometimes I like to choose my own. A way that I can improve is make more time for me to read and I can try new genre.

  11. 1: My daily reading habit is to read at least 4 times a week. If I don't like a book it becomes more challenging to read that often. If I like a book I read for more then 30 minutes 7 days a week.

2: In my reading habit, I would really like to try a different genre. I am really into fantasy and fiction, so whenever I try another genre unless it is violent in any way I find it boring. I am going to try different genres because I feel that I need to give other genres a chance.

  14. Yes, I read 7 times a week. I do because I like reading.

I can improve if my dad stops saying reading is a waste of time.

  15. I read every day of the week for an hour.

    Nothing to improve.

  16. 1.) I don't read 5 days a week. I read every single day for 20 minutes (if I have time). I love to read. Sometimes, I read 30 minutes if I have more time. It rarely ever happens when I can't read a day. Yesterday, I read for 20 minutes because I had quite some homework.

2.) I am not sure if I can improve too much, but I know. I can a little bit. I can improve by taking time from my day to read 20 minutes. If I realize that I have to much homework and I can't read because I am staying up until 10:00 pm, then I get a little sad. When I have to do some really hard homework, and I don't want to do it, I always think to myself: at least I can read; that makes me happy.

  18. I would read a book with my friend or my mom or dad. I only really enjoy graphic novels but my teachers and parents have helped me adapt to other type of genre. At my old school i was in a reading class with my friends in 1st and 2nd grade, At that time i didn't no how to read that good i used to just freeze and it was always very embarrassing for me to read in front of the class but i have over came that fear and i have gottin help from my family and friends. At home i read ONLY graphic novels that is the only type of genre of books i read at my house. i try to real 3 chapters per 3 days. -Teresa

  19. I read but sometimes I do not have time to read because of everything that goes on in my life. I do read a book of my choice and right now I am reading Insurgent. What I can do to improve is to set reminders to read so I can remember and keep my book with all the time
