The Habit

20 minutes a day. 10 minutes a day. 5 minutes? None?

Do I read? Can I read? I mean really read. The kind of reading where I can't imagine not reading every single day. I'm talking about a habit here. The habit. Like brushing my teeth. Every day.

What is it about me that makes me a reader... or not?

What can I do to improve?

It's no different from any other part of my life. I have to constantly ask myself: how can I get better? Even Paul George and Kobe Bryant, as talented basketball players as they are, ask themselves how they can improve their game.

Of course, this all means that reading has to be something worth doing. That reading is something everyone should know how to do and do well.

I've never met anyone, heard of anyone, or seen anything that says, "reading isn't important - don't do it."

I have met a lot of people who have said, "I don't like reading. Reading is hard. I don't read. I don't take time to read. Reading sucks."

Patricia Polacco has dyslexia and didn't learn to read until she was 14. Then she couldn't stop reading. She is now a professional writer.

I've also met people who have said, "reading that book gave me hope that my life wasn't so bad. Reading that story taught me that I wasn't the only one being treated like a piece of crap. Reading that story made me realize I wanted to help cure cancer or find a way to help people who were homeless. Reading let me travel to places all over the world without having to leave my room.

How do you feel about reading today?

Answer these questions in the comment section below:

1. Describe your daily reading habit. Do you read at least five times a week on your own from a book of your own choosing? Why or why not? Explain.

2. What can you do to improve? Diversify your genre? Find a book or short story that you really, truly like? Stop faking it? Take time from something else you do every day and give it to your reading habit? Explain.

  2. 1. I don't have any sort of a reading habit. I don't like to reread books and there have been no good books that appeal to me.

    2. I can improve by reading. I can't read a book I don't like. So I would need to find a book I actually like. But once I find that book I just read the whole thing that day. Soooo I don't know except somehow finding a book.

  4. I read a lot, actually. I mostly read realistic fiction, fiction, or graphic novels. I do read between switching topics, and when I finish, and if I have time before I sleep. I read because its something to do when I have nothing to do,, and I read between topics because it helps me clear my brain, and refresh. I think reading is something I enjoy that is school related. Then my parents don't really mind. :)

To improve, I would say I read a lot of books, like Harry Potter, Apparently what I like to read everyday is below my level. I do try sometimes to read above, but I don't do it often. So I could read more my level more often. But I think, honestly, that's about it. XD

  5. 1.) I sometimes read at least 5 days. It depends if I like the book or not. I don't like when people tell me to read a book I like picking my own because I hate being forced to read.
2.) I'm fine I just pick my own books. The one thing i hate and i wont do is being forced to read a book or talk about it.

    1. I agree with you picking your own book is better then someone making you read a book.

  9. 1.No, today I do not read five time a week I read from 2-3 times a week outside of school.

    1. Sometimes, I read 5 times a week. Right now I am not reading as much because the book that I am reading is not very interesting. I try, but there are other things right now when those other things seem more interesting.
    2. I may need to find more books that I really like because this one is taking me a very long time. When I really have a book that I like, like a Rick Riordan book, I will be trying to read it nonstop. Right now, other things seem more interesting. I want to read this book though because it is relatively interesting. I will probably have to take out those other things that are more interesting.

  13. 1. I read 2-3 times a week. I only like reading when I'm at a good part in my book.

    2. To improve my reading habits, I think I should choose books wisely. I have trouble reading a book that I'm not interested in.

  14. I do not read as much as I used to. I used to read a lot but now I dont I really should read more and no I don't keep a good habit. I sometimes read magazines but that's it. Something I can do to improve is I can try and fit more reading into my schedule. I still love to read I just dont do it anymore that much.

  15. 1)My reading habit is absolutely terrible. I know that reading is important and I want to read. I just don't enjoy it. I've tried many times and have never found a book that I like. I don't read one time a week.I don't have time to read and I can't find a book that I like.
    2) I don't know how to improve besides starting to read. Even if I start reading I will most likely read fiction and never read biography. I just can't find a book, if I find a decent book I will read it. Like Divergent, I read it and I liked it.

  17. 1. Describe your daily reading habit. Do you read at least five times a week on your own from a book of your own choosing? Why or why not? Explain.

I read at least 20 mins a day five times. I like to ask people if the book is good and if nobody has read it I read it because I think it is going to be good. I like to read good books not books people do not like.

    2. What can you do to improve? Diversify your genre? Find a book or short story that you really, truly like? Stop faking it? Take time from something else you do every day and give it to your reading habit? Explain.

What I can improve is to read longer and maybe not fall asleep in the middle of my book. I like Fiction and Realistic Fiction but I don't like boring books that have no interesting parts to it. Most of the time I like the books I read because I can relate to them.

  18. Ethan Weiss,

1.My daily reading habbit is not a lot of reading sometimes i dont read anything but if i do it would be for a cupple of minutes. .No I do not read five times a week from a book of my own choosing. Sometimes its because i just dont have a lot of time or i just want to be done and do my own thing.

    2. I could take some time off of watching tv and i could just sit on my couch and read for a while. I really like fantasy but i like reading history sometimes. I have a history and fiction book upstairs in my room and i could read a little bit of them, only one of them is a short story. i could take time off of TV and maybe playing video games.

  19. My daily reading habit is reading on the bus and before I go to bed. Yes I do read a book of my choosing at least 5 times a week. I read because I like to read about fantasy, fiction and biography. Also sometimes when I want to see a movie I need to read the book first before seeing it. Also sometimes I have a lot of free time and there's nothing much to do.

I don't think I need to improve read because I read it every night and in the morning and I read some of the really good authors so I am pleased. Also I read long books so I am occupied. Also I go to the library a lot so I am always getting new books.

  20. I read like sometimes but not as much as I hopes. I know that reading is importent but I don't always get to it all the time. I like to read fiction because it is just full of so much action.

When I do read at least 3 times a week but i need to work on reading more. I really only read fiction. I only read books that I like and if I don't then I don't read it.

  21. 1.I don't usually read, because i usually forget. I'm usually caught up in homework, or practicing my instruments.

    2. I should probably get reminders to help me read

  22. I read every day at least 20 min but usually read 30-40. I barley mis any days in reading. I read a book I want to read and occasionally one my mom forces me to read. I do this because the books I want to read pull me in. I do not know what to improve on. I guess I can defersify my genres.

  23. I do not read 5 times a day. I have never liked reading. i think so because i like the outdoors more then the indoors so i like to play out side not have to stay inside to read. sometimes i do read becasue i fined a book that i like because it is a book about sports or it is sifi.

I can fined a book that i realy like so that i will like reading. I think that books with sports, I would read more. I think that it would be good if i was in the habit of reading.
